Continuing LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN

LETTER WRITING WORKS

Sample Letters used during this last campaign from LMLT can be used as examples for the upcoming battle still to be waged.

Many tenants are unaware how big an impact letters have on elected officials, and few tenants actually write letters. We have to change this. It is rare for a legislator to receive ten letters about anything. When legislators receive hundreds of letters from tenants in their districts, they pay attention! (A faxed letter is as good as a mailed letter.)

Your letter should be handwritten or typed. A two-sentence handwritten letter is more effective than a five-paragraph form letter. An effective short letter can read something like: "Dear Councilmember So-and-so, I'm a tenant and I vote in your district. I urge you to support renewal of tenant protection laws without any weakening amendments. Please respond to me in writing. " Sign and then print your name and complete address.

Get Others to Write Too
Set up a table in your building's lobby, in your neighborhood or at your tenant group's meeting. Have pens, paper and envelopes, along with the names and addresses of the officials you want to influence. Get your neighbors or members to write letters and address envelopes on the spot, collect the letters, and mail them over the next several days. The hardest part of letter writing for most people is getting started. Setting up a table is a good way to break the ice. You can also ask people to give you a contribution for postage.
